How to Choose a Web Dev Company in Perth and What It Costs

How to choose a web dev company in Perth: ownership, fixed pricing, local SEO basics and what JetBlok packages cost for tradies and small businesses.

How to Choose a Web Dev Company in Perth and What It Costs

Getting a website built for your Perth business should not feel like a gamble. I am Rav, and I run JetBlok Studio out of Gosnells. I often speak with tradies and small business owners who have three quotes in front of them, wildly different numbers, and no clear way to work out which one is fair.

This is how I would sort through those quotes if it were my own money, including the questions that separate a proper web dev company from someone who disappears after the invoice clears. JetBlok builds fast custom Next.js sites for Australian tradies and small businesses, with quote forms, click-to-call, local SEO, Google Business Profile setup and pages structured so search engines and AI tools can read them. What a web dev company actually does

A web dev company builds the machinery behind your site: the code, the page structure, the forms, the integrations, the hosting setup and the ongoing fixes. A web design studio leans more towards how the site looks and reads. Plenty of Perth businesses do both, and many studios keep a developer or two in house, so the label on the door matters far less than who is genuinely doing the work.

Web dev company versus web design studio

What you need Who usually handles it
Layouts, colour, imagery, page flow Designer
Code, speed, security, forms, integrations Developer
Both, delivered as one job A studio that runs both in house

Ask directly who will build your site and who your contact will be once it launches. If the person selling the work is not the person doing it, find out how changes get made, who approves them and how long that usually takes.

Where the real value hides

Most of what you pay for is invisible. A site that loads quickly on a phone with average reception, forms that actually send, a structure search engines can read, and a setup that does not fall over the first time you update a page. Those things rarely appear in a mock-up, but they are what you are really buying.

Questions to ask before you sign anything

  1. Who owns the domain name, and will it be registered in my name with my email on the account?
  2. What exactly is included in the price, and what gets billed as an extra?
  3. Will I own the site and the code when the project is finished?
  4. What happens if I want to leave, and can the site be moved to another provider?
  5. Who do I contact after launch, and how quickly do they normally reply?
  6. Can I see live sites you have built, and can I load a few on my phone right now?
  7. How is SEO handled, or is that a separate job and a separate cost?
  8. Is there a written agreement, and what does it say about changes and delays?

Ask these in writing if you can. A company that answers clearly and quickly is showing you how the project will run. One that dodges the ownership question is telling you something too.

Fixed price or hourly

Push for a fixed price whenever the job allows it. Fixed pricing means you know the number before work starts, which suits most tradies and small operators because you can compare the quote against your budget without guessing how many hours it might take.

Fixed price Hourly
Works best when Scope is clear from the start Scope keeps shifting or is unknown
Your exposure The number is agreed upfront Cost grows with every change
Watch for Vague wording about what is included No estimate range and no cap

If someone quotes hourly, ask for an estimated range and a cap. If someone quotes fixed, ask what sits outside that number. Both answers tell you plenty about how the job will actually run. More on that approach in fixed price website design Perth.

Who owns the website and the code

Your domain name should be registered in your name, with your contact email attached to the account. If a company holds it under their own details, you are effectively renting your own address. Ask where the site will be hosted, what happens to your content if you leave, and whether you can get a copy of the files. Get those answers in writing before you pay a deposit.

Hosting, care plans and life after launch

A website is not a one-off purchase. Hosting renews, software needs updating, forms need testing, and content changes as your business does. Some companies bundle hosting and support into a monthly figure, some charge per change, and some do neither. Ask what the monthly cost covers and whether it is optional.

Support should be a service you choose, not a condition of owning your site. JetBlok offers an optional Care Plan at $299 per month for ongoing SEO, updates and support, and clients can decline it and still own everything they paid for. Hosting is included on the Next.js sites I host, under fair use. You own your domain.

Local SEO basics your new site should include

A site built without search in mind usually needs rebuilding later. At minimum, ask for these:

  • A clear page for each main service you offer
  • Suburb pages for the areas you genuinely work in, written properly rather than copied and pasted
  • Name, address and phone details on the site that match your Google Business Profile
  • Fast mobile load times and a click-to-call button
  • Page structure and schema that search engines and AI tools can read

If the answer to these is vague, or the plan is to sort SEO out later, either budget for it as a separate job or speak with someone who includes it in the build. You can read more about how JetBlok handles local SEO in Perth and SEO in Perth.

What a Perth small business should expect to pay

There is no single market rate, and anyone who claims otherwise has not seen the quotes you have. Scope drives the number: how many pages, whether copywriting is included, whether you need bookings, ecommerce or custom functionality. What you should expect is transparency, so a quote lists what is included, what is optional and when payments fall due.

For reference, JetBlok publishes package pricing so people can compare without sitting through a sales call first. Current packages are one-time builds. All figures AUD.

Package Price Suited to
Starter $999 one-time Up to 5 pages, enquiry form, click-to-call and one showcase such as a gallery or reviews
Growth $1,999 one-time More pages, quote-style forms, gallery plus reviews, Google Business setup and 3 months of Local SEO
Pro $2,999+ Larger structures and custom requirements, with 6 months of SEO
Care Plan $299 per month, optional Ongoing SEO, updates and support if you want it handled. Not required to own your site

Other Perth providers set their own numbers, and larger agencies generally charge more because you are also paying for account managers and overheads. That is not automatically a problem. It simply means you should compare scope line by line rather than comparing the bottom line. Full package detail sits on the web design cost Perth page.

When a local studio beats a big agency

For a single-service trade or a small shopfront, a local studio usually makes more sense. You get a direct line to the person doing the work, decisions move faster, and your project is less likely to sit in a queue behind a national campaign. Bigger teams earn their keep on bigger scopes: complex integrations, several brands under one roof, or work needing multiple specialists at once.

I am based in Gosnells and work across Perth metro, including places like Canning Vale, Thornlie, Armadale, Fremantle and Joondalup. If you are a trade, start with websites for tradies. If you are a local business more broadly, small business web design in Perth covers the usual scope.

How to check a company before you commit

  • Load their own website on your phone and pay attention to how it feels
  • Ask for two or three live sites they built, not mock-ups or screenshots
  • Email a question and see how long the reply takes and whether it answers you
  • Check that the impressive portfolio sites were actually built by them
  • Read negative reviews as carefully as positive ones on any directory that lists web developers in Australia

Directories and review sites are a fine way to build a shortlist, but they are a starting point rather than a verdict. The real test is whether the person you are talking to answers your question directly, and whether they will put the important details in writing. Frequently Asked Questions

How much should a small business in Perth pay for a website?

It depends on scope more than anything else. A simple trade site with a handful of pages sits at the lower end, while bookings, ecommerce or custom features push the price up. JetBlok publishes packages starting at $999 one-time, but other Perth companies price differently. Get three itemised quotes and compare what is included before you compare the totals.

Will I own my website and the code?

You should, and you should confirm it in writing before paying a deposit. Ask for the domain to be registered in your name, ask whether you can get a copy of the files and content, and ask what happens if you move to another provider. If a company hesitates on any of those, treat it as a warning sign. At JetBlok you own the site and the domain. Hosting is included on Next.js sites I host, and the Care Plan is optional.

Do I need to pay a monthly fee?

Not always. Hosting and support are real costs, but they should be explained clearly and priced separately from the build. JetBlok offers an optional Care Plan at $299 per month for ongoing SEO, updates and support. It is a choice, not a condition of owning your site, and nobody should tell you otherwise.

How do I know if a web dev company is any good?

Look at sites they have actually built and load a few on your phone. Ask who will do the work, who answers questions after launch, and what happens when something breaks. Check that the quotes are itemised. A company that explains its process in plain English and puts the important details in writing is usually the safer pick.

What does JetBlok include that a bare brochure site usually misses?

Fast custom Next.js builds, quote or enquiry forms, click-to-call, SEO foundations, and on Growth and Pro packages Google Business Profile setup plus Local SEO for a set period. Pages are structured so search engines and AI tools can read them. I do not guarantee rankings, because nobody honestly can.

Should SEO be in the build price or separate?

Ask for foundations in the build at minimum: clean structure, metadata, sitemap and mobile speed. Ongoing ranking work is usually separate. At JetBlok, Starter includes SEO foundations. Growth includes 3 months of Local SEO. Pro includes 6 months. After that, ongoing SEO sits in the optional Care Plan or a separate retainer. See local SEO Perth for how that side fits.
